VICTORIA STATION 2050-2070 FUTURES RESEARCH, NARRATIVES, ARTEFACTS, STRATEGY

I WORKED ASRESEARCH LEAD

In preparation for a major investment into the infrastructure of a central train station, Network Rail needed help in envisioning the potential future scenarios they should plan for. They hired us to help imagine how the transport hub could look like in 30-50 years from now, with the emphasis on emerging technologies and contextualisation of the potential societal shifts. 

The aim of the project was to ceate future scenarios and user profiles to showcase potential challenges and opportunities that would inform the development of the station in 2050-70.

This foresight project started by literature review, trend analysis and expert interviews, to ground our understanding of the as-is state of the station and the transport industry. It was then followed by mapping of the first principles of the train stations and technologies on the rise, which would guide the further research direction. We then conducted in-person ethnographic research into everyday operations of the hub, and understanding of the local context. 

In preparation to write the narratives, to ground our speculations, we did technology backcasting, trying to understand future trajectories. However, there are many ways of approaching futures, and we had to set the tone that would be fit for purpose of this project. 

Due to the client’s prefernce to focus on aspirational instead of generally possible narratives, we have ensured that the described emerging technologies would be leveraged to the benefit of the future user instead of exploring every possible outcome of their deployment. We contextualised potential risks against policy development. 

Supported by workshops with key stakeholders we delivered a useful portfolio of recommendations and future-facing but realistic stories from 2050-2070, supported by scientific and technological trends. These narratives were containers for achievements, technologies, use of space and behaviours, showcasing that even though technology changes quickly, the human nature doesn’t.
